Epione: Greek Goddess of Soothing Pain

The Story of Epione

Epione was the goddess who soothed pain and the wife of Asclepius, the god of medicine. Her name comes from a Greek word meaning gentle or soothing. Where her husband cured disease, Epione brought comfort and relief to those who were suffering.

Together Epione and Asclepius raised a whole family of healers. Their daughters included Hygieia, Panacea, Iaso and Aceso, each tied to a different part of health and recovery. Their sons Machaon and Podalirius became skilled physicians who tended the wounded Greeks during the Trojan War.

Epione has almost no adventures of her own, which suits a goddess whose gift was quiet comfort. She was honored beside Asclepius in his sanctuaries, including the great healing center at Epidaurus, where the sick came hoping for an end to their pain. For the Greeks she was a reminder that easing suffering was as much a part of medicine as curing it.
