The Story of Hydros
Hydros was the primordial god of water in the Orphic tradition, a set of mystical beliefs linked to the legendary singer Orpheus. His name simply means water. He stood for the primeval waters that existed at the very beginning of the world.
In one Orphic account of creation, water and a primal earth or mud formed the first principle of all things. From them came Chronos, the god of time, who in turn helped give shape to the cosmos. This version made water one of the oldest powers of all.
Hydros appears only in Orphic texts preserved by later philosophers, so very few details about him survive. He had no temples, no cult and no myths of his own. The idea behind him echoes the early philosopher Thales, who taught that everything comes from water.
