Iacchus: Greek God of the Eleusinian Mysteries

The Story of Iacchus

Iacchus was a god closely tied to the Eleusinian Mysteries, the secret rites honoring Demeter and Persephone. His family is told in different ways. He was called a son of Demeter or of Persephone, and he was often identified with Dionysus.

Every year, during the Mysteries, a great procession set out from Athens to Eleusis along the Sacred Way, and his statue was carried at its head. Worshippers waved torches and shouted his name in a joyful chant, and many scholars think the god grew out of that ritual cry. In Aristophanes' comedy The Frogs, the chorus of initiates sings to Iacchus as their guiding star in the night.

Herodotus tells that before the naval battle of Salamis, an exile saw a huge cloud of dust rising from Eleusis and heard the cry of Iacchus, though Attica was empty of people. It was taken as a sign that the gods would help the Greeks against the Persians. For the initiates, Iacchus was the bright, leading spirit of the most sacred festival in Athens.
