Menoetius: Titan God of Rage and Rash Action

The Story of Menoetius

Menoetius was a son of the Titan Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene, and the brother of Atlas, Prometheus and Epimetheus. His name is often linked with doomed might, and he stood for rage, rash action and violent pride. Hesiod describes him as arrogant and overbearing.

During the war between the Titans and the Olympians, Menoetius fought against Zeus. Because of his pride and reckless violence, Zeus struck him with a thunderbolt and hurled him down into Erebus, the dark realm beneath the earth. Hesiod tells this in only a few lines, and few other stories about him survive.

Menoetius had no worship in Greece, and he appears mainly as a warning. For the Greeks, his fate showed the danger of hubris, the overconfident pride that always drew the punishment of the gods. A different, mortal Menoetius was the father of Patroclus, the friend of Achilles.
