Panacea: Greek Goddess of Cures

The Story of Panacea

Panacea was a daughter of Asclepius, the god of medicine, and his wife Epione. She was a sister of Hygieia, Iaso and Aceso, and together the sisters shared in their father's healing work. Her name means all healing.

Few stories are told about Panacea herself. She was the goddess of the universal remedy, the cure that could heal any illness, while her sisters stood for good health, recovery and the healing process. The Greeks pictured this family as a team, each member watching over one part of a patient's journey from sickness back to strength.

Panacea was honored with her father in his sanctuaries, where the sick came to pray and sleep in the hope of a cure. Her name appears in the opening lines of the Hippocratic Oath, where doctors swore by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia and Panacea. Today a panacea means a single solution for every problem, a word often used to remind us that no such thing exists.
