The Story of Phantasos

Phantasos was a god of dreams and a son of Hypnos, the god of sleep. His brothers were Morpheus and Phobetor, and together they sent dreams to sleeping mortals. He is known mainly from the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses.

Each brother had his own kind of dream. Morpheus took the shape of people, and Phobetor took the shape of animals, but Phantasos appeared as earth, rocks, water, trees and other lifeless things. Ovid says that these brothers visited kings and leaders by night, while lesser dream spirits visited ordinary people.

Phantasos had no worship and no other stories, but he gave a face to the strange, dreamlike scenes that fill sleep. His name comes from the same Greek root as words such as fantasy and phantom. He remains a small but fitting figure for the surreal side of dreaming.
