Theia: Titan Goddess of Sight and Shining Light

The Story of Theia

Theia was one of the twelve Titans, a daughter of Uranus and Gaia. Her name means divine, and she was the goddess of sight and shining light. She married her brother Hyperion, the Titan of heavenly light.

With Hyperion, Theia became the mother of Helios the sun, Selene the moon and Eos the dawn, so all the bright lights of the sky came from her. The poet Pindar praised her as the goddess who gives gold its power and shine. The Greeks believed she gave gold, silver and precious gems their brilliance.

Theia has almost no myths of her own, and she was not widely worshipped. She was honored instead as the source of light and value in the world, linked with clear sight and the sparkle of precious things. Her children, who crossed the sky every day and night, kept her memory alive in Greek religion.
