Battle of Manzikert: What Happened
On 26 August 1071, the Byzantine emperor Romanos IV Diogenes was defeated by the Seljuk Turkish sultan Alp Arslan near Manzikert, a town in eastern Anatolia, in modern Turkey. Romanos had led a large army east to secure the frontier against Seljuk raids. During the battle, the Byzantines advanced, but as evening fell and Romanos ordered a withdrawal, confusion spread through the ranks. Part of the army, commanded by Andronikos Doukas, a member of a rival family, retreated from the field, possibly deliberately, leaving the emperor exposed. Romanos was surrounded and captured, the first Byzantine emperor ever taken prisoner by a Muslim ruler. Alp Arslan treated him generously and released him after agreeing a treaty. But when Romanos returned, he found that he had been overthrown. He was later blinded by his rivals and died of his wounds. The chaos and civil war that followed left Anatolia open to Turkish settlers and raiders, and within a few years much of it was lost. Manzikert is seen as a turning point in the empire's decline.
