Byzantine Recapture of Constantinople: What Happened

On 25 July 1261, forces of the Empire of Nicaea recaptured Constantinople from the Latin Empire, which had ruled the city since the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The recapture happened almost by chance. The Nicaean general Alexios Strategopoulos had been sent with a small force of around 800 soldiers to watch the Bulgarian frontier and test the city's defenses. He learned that most of the Latin garrison and the Venetian fleet had sailed away on an expedition to the island of Daphnousia. With the help of local Greeks who knew a way inside, his men entered the city through a passage near the walls at night and opened a gate. The Latin emperor Baldwin II fled, leaving behind his crown and scepter. On 15 August 1261, the Nicaean emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos entered Constantinople in a solemn procession and was crowned in Hagia Sophia. The Byzantine Empire was restored in its ancient capital. Michael founded the Palaiologan dynasty, which ruled until the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453.
