Destruction of Psara: What Happened
In June 1824, an Ottoman fleet under Hüsrev Pasha attacked the small island of Psara, in the eastern Aegean. Psara was one of the three great naval islands of the revolution, along with Hydra and Spetses, and its sailors, including Konstantinos Kanaris, had caused heavy damage to the Ottoman fleet with their fireships. The Ottomans landed a large force, and although the islanders fought fiercely, they were overwhelmed. Many of the inhabitants were killed or enslaved. According to tradition, the last defenders gathered in a fort and, rather than surrender, blew up its gunpowder store, killing themselves along with many attackers. The destruction of Psara deeply shocked Greeks. The national poet Dionysios Solomos wrote a famous short poem about it, imagining Glory walking alone on the island's blackened ridge, wearing a wreath made of a few dry grasses left on the desolate land. Survivors resettled elsewhere, some founding the town of Nea Psara on Evia. Kanaris took revenge later that year, attacking Ottoman ships. Psara never regained its former prosperity.
