First Modern Olympic Games: What Happened
From 6 to 15 April 1896, Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games, reviving the ancient festival that had ended more than 1,500 years earlier. The Games were the idea of the French educator Pierre de Coubertin, who founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894, with the Greek writer Dimitrios Vikelas as its first president. Athens was chosen to host the first Games in honor of their ancient origins. Funding was a challenge, but the Greek businessman George Averoff paid for the restoration of the ancient Panathenaic Stadium in white marble, where the main events took place. Around 240 athletes, all men, from about 14 countries competed in events including athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. The American James Connolly became the first modern Olympic champion by winning the triple jump. The highlight for Greece was the marathon, a new event inspired by the legend of the runner from the Battle of Marathon, which was won by the Greek water carrier Spyridon Louis. The success of the Games launched the modern Olympic movement.
