Liberation of Korytsa: What Happened

On 22 November 1940, the Greek army entered the town of Korytsa, known today as Korçë in southeastern Albania, which had been an important Italian base. It was one of the first Allied land victories of World War II, and it caused great excitement in Greece and among the Allies. After stopping the Italian invasion at Pindus and Elaia–Kalamas, the Greek army under General Alexandros Papagos launched a counteroffensive in mid-November. Greek troops of the Western Macedonia army section attacked the Italian positions on the mountains around Korytsa, especially the heights of Morova and Ivan, in harsh conditions. After days of fighting, the Italian defenses collapsed, and the Italian forces withdrew. The Greeks captured large amounts of weapons and supplies. The town had a significant Orthodox Christian population, many of whom welcomed the Greek soldiers. Church bells rang across Greece to celebrate the victory. The capture of Korytsa was followed by further Greek advances, including the capture of Argyrokastro, modern Gjirokastër, and Agioi Saranta, modern Sarandë, in December 1940.
