Nika Riots: What Happened
In January 532 AD, the most violent riot in the history of Constantinople nearly overthrew the emperor Justinian I. The trouble began among the chariot-racing factions of the Hippodrome, known as the Blues and the Greens, which were powerful political and social groups as well as sports fans. After the arrest and botched execution of members of both factions, the Blues and Greens united against the emperor, shouting Nika, meaning conquer or win, the cry used to cheer on charioteers. The rioters set fire to large parts of the city, including the original church of Hagia Sophia, and demanded the dismissal of unpopular officials. They then proclaimed a new emperor, Hypatius, a nephew of an earlier ruler. Justinian was ready to flee the city, but according to the historian Procopius, his wife, the Empress Theodora, persuaded him to stay, declaring that royalty makes a fine burial shroud. Justinian's generals, Belisarius and Mundus, trapped the rioters inside the Hippodrome and massacred them. Around 30,000 people are said to have been killed, and Justinian's rule was secured.
