Who Was St. Maximos the Confessor

St. Maximos the Confessor was born around 580 AD in Constantinople. He received an excellent education and initially served as an official in the imperial administration of the Byzantine Empire.

Despite his successful career, he eventually chose to leave public life and dedicate himself fully to the Christian faith, becoming a monk.

Defender of Orthodox Teaching

St. Maximos became widely known for defending Orthodox Christian teaching during a major theological conflict known as Monothelitism. This doctrine claimed that Christ had only one divine will rather than both a human and divine will.

Maximos strongly opposed this teaching and defended the belief that Jesus Christ possesses both a divine and human will, in accordance with Orthodox Christian doctrine.

Suffering for the Faith

Because of his defense of the faith, St. Maximos faced persecution and punishment from political and religious authorities who supported the opposing doctrine. He was imprisoned and subjected to severe punishment for refusing to change his beliefs.

Despite these hardships, he remained steadfast in his teachings and continued to defend the Orthodox understanding of Christ.
