St. Photini the Samaritan Woman Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Photini the Samaritan Woman is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as the woman who encountered Jesus at Jacob’s Well and later became a Christian evangelist and martyr. Her feast day is celebrated on February 26, and on this day people named Fotini, Photini, Fotina, Fotoula, Foteini, Faye, and Tina, among other variations celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Photini the Samaritan Woman

St. Photini is the woman described in the Gospel of John who met Jesus Christ at Jacob’s Well in Samaria. During their conversation, Christ revealed important spiritual teachings and spoke about the “living water” that leads to eternal life.

After this encounter, she recognized Jesus as the Messiah and shared the news with others in her town.

Witness to Christ

According to Christian tradition, St. Photini became one of the earliest witnesses to Christ’s teachings. After hearing Jesus speak, she went back to her village and told others about him, leading many people to believe.

Because of her role in spreading the message of Christ, she is remembered as one of the first evangelists of the Christian faith.

Missionary Work and Martyrdom

Later Christian tradition describes St. Photini as continuing to preach the Christian faith beyond Samaria. She eventually traveled and helped spread Christianity in other regions.

During a period of persecution against Christians, she remained faithful to her beliefs and ultimately suffered martyrdom.
