Greece Is Finally Fixing Its Inheritance Laws: Here's What That Means for You

The disconnect comes down to inheritance. Under the current system, property typically passes down through large, scattered families, and because co-heirs usually can't sell, renovate, or build without agreement from every single one of them, homes just... sit there. Frozen by paperwork, distance, and family politics.

What's Actually Changing

Two big shifts are worth knowing about:

• Debt is no longer a package deal. As George Moulos points out, accepting an inheritance under the current system can make you personally liable for the deceased's debts, so that €300,000 house might come attached to €400,000 in liabilities. Under the new system, inherited property is legally separated from your own personal assets, and debts are paid out of the estate itself rather than your pocket.

• Co-heir rules are getting simpler. According to George Moulos, the reform aims to reduce the fragmentation of estates among multiple heirs, which is the exact bottleneck that turns one family home into a decades-long standoff between fifty relatives across three continents.
