What’s happening

Greek clubs ended a difficult set of home European playoff matches with mixed but unfavorable outcomes. Panathinaikos drew 2-2 against Viktoria Plzen in a match where it controlled much of the play, but conceded from long-range efforts and failed to convert performance into a win. PAOK lost 2-1 at home to Celta Vigo after trailing by two goals at halftime, then reducing the gap late in the match. Both ties remain active ahead of second legs, with Panathinaikos traveling to Czechia and PAOK heading to Spain. The immediate scoreboard impact is pressure, but elimination has not been decided for either club at this stage.

GetGreece’s Take

Panathinaikos and PAOK showed the same core problem in different ways: good phases without result control. Panathinaikos played well enough to win but still gave up too much from distance and left the tie open, while PAOK put itself in a hole at home and now has to chase away. At this stage in Europe, “we played well” has almost no value if you do not protect game states and convert your best moments. Greek teams keep paying for that gap between performance and scoreboard management. The second legs are still alive for both clubs, but the margin is now tactical discipline, not emotion. Panathinaikos needs cleaner finishing and better control after scoring, and PAOK needs to stop conceding structure in early phases before the game drifts. If either side treats this as bad luck instead of a control issue, they are out.

What to watch next

- Whether Panathinaikos reduces long-range concession risk in the return leg
- Whether PAOK stabilizes first-half defensive structure away from home
- Whether Greek clubs improve chance-to-goal conversion in decisive playoff windows
- Whether second-leg set-piece execution creates the margin needed for progression
