Giannis Antetokounmpo Traded to Miami Heat in Blockbuster Deal

The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, ending the Greek superstar's 13-year tenure with the only NBA franchise he has ever known.

Milwaukee will also send Bobby Portis to Miami. In return, the Bucks receive Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including the No. 13 pick in Tuesday's draft), one pick swap, and a second-round selection. The deal closes on July 6.

The trade ends months of tension between Antetokounmpo and the organization. The 31-year-old and his agent Alex Saratsis had been pushing for a move since May 2025, repeatedly making clear to general manager Jon Horst that he would not sign another extension in Milwaukee. The Bucks resisted until this past February's trade deadline, when they began fielding serious offers. Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam ultimately set a hard deadline of today, NBA Draft day, for a resolution.

Antetokounmpo played just 36 games last season due to injury as Milwaukee finished 32-50 and missed the playoffs entirely. When healthy, he still averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists on 62% shooting.

The Bucks had two finalists: the Heat and the Boston Celtics, both on Antetokounmpo's preferred destination list. Boston offered 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks. Milwaukee chose Miami's package instead, prioritizing younger players and long-term flexibility for new head coach Taylor Jenkins over an immediate star-for-star swap.

And here is the question every NBA fan is asking right now: did the Bucks get enough, or did the legend Pat Riley just steal Giannis Antetokounmpo?

Riley, who has landed LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, and Chris Bosh in Miami over the years, now adds a two-time MVP and 2021 Finals MVP to that list. He pairs Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo on a Heat team that missed the playoffs last season and is now an instant Eastern Conference contender. The man has done this before. He knows exactly what he is doing.

The Bucks, meanwhile, turned down a proven Finals MVP in Jaylen Brown for a collection of younger pieces. Herro, 26, made the All-Star team in 2025 but played only 33 games last season following foot surgery. Ware is a promising 22-year-old center. Jaquez averaged 15.4 points last season off the bench. Jakucionis, 20, was the No. 20 pick in last year's draft and averaged 6.2 points in limited minutes. Milwaukee is betting on the future. Whether that bet pays off, or whether Riley just pulled off the heist of the decade, is a conversation that will last years.

Antetokounmpo arrived in Milwaukee in 2013 as an unknown 18-year-old from Sepolia, Athens. He left as the franchise's greatest player: a 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, Defensive Player of the Year (2019), 2021 Finals MVP, 2024 NBA Cup champion and NBA Cup MVP, and the man who delivered the Bucks their first championship in 50 years, averaging 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in the 2021 Finals. Milwaukee won one playoff series after that title, then suffered three straight first-round exits before this past season's collapse.

He has one guaranteed year remaining on his contract, with a 2027 player option.
