How Many Days Should I Spend in Drama?
Drama's wineries, caves, and mountain scenery spread out enough that three to four days makes far more sense than a single afternoon stop.
Drama itself covers well in a day. Agia Varvara Park, fed by a natural spring running straight through the city center, anchors an easy morning or afternoon walk, and the Archaeological Museum along with the old tobacco warehouses nearby fill out the rest of the day with the city's own history.
A second day belongs to the region's wine. Seven wineries sit within easy driving distance, spread across areas like Adriani and Prosotsani, and pairing a few tastings with a stop at a working cheese factory in Petrousa gives the day a real sense of how much of the local economy runs on food and wine production.
A third day opens up the Aggitis River Cave, the largest river cave in Europe, where a corridor runs above an underground river lined with stalactites, and Alistrati Cave nearby adds a second, differently decorated cave system worth pairing with the first. The Lisse Fortress, tied to Greek resistance history, gives sweeping views over the surrounding countryside on the same day.
A fourth day suits the primeval forest of Fraktou, one of the last three untouched forests of its kind in Europe, and Mount Falakro's ski resort adds a different kind of stop depending on the season. Philippi, a UNESCO-listed ancient site with Roman ruins and early Christian basilicas, sits close enough to combine with a stop in Kavala for anyone extending the trip further.
One day covers the city center comfortably, two adds the wine region properly, and three or four brings in the caves, the fortress, and the primeval forest. Even a short stop leaves real time for the park and a wine tasting, but Drama's mix of caves, wine, and mountains makes a strong case for the extra days.
