How Many Days Should I Spend in Xanthi?

Xanthi's old town alone deserves a full day, and two to four days lets the surrounding rivers, beaches, and mountain villages round out the visit properly.

Xanthi rewards a slow morning through its old town, where Ottoman-era houses and neoclassical mansions line cobbled streets protected as a heritage settlement since 1978. The Folk and History Museum, housed in two matching tobacco merchant mansions, and the central bazaar, still a working market on Saturdays, both deserve unhurried time rather than a quick pass through.

A second day opens up the coast and the mountains in different directions. The beach at Myrodato sits about 25 kilometers from the city center, close enough for an easy half day, while the Pomak villages in the hills toward the Bulgarian border, including Smiggada and Echinos, show a different side of the region's mixed Greek, Muslim, and Pomak population.

A third day belongs to the Nestos river gorge, where rafting and hiking trails cross terrain that looks nothing like the city, and the Livaditis Waterfall, the largest in the Balkans, sits about two hours into the Rhodope foothills for anyone willing to make it a fuller day trip.

With a fourth day, the wetlands around Lake Vistonida and the Porto Lagos lagoon draw flamingos for much of the year, and Xanthi connects easily to both Komotini and Kavala for anyone extending the trip further into the region.

One day covers the old town and bazaar comfortably, two adds the coast or the mountain villages, and three or four brings the Nestos gorge and the wetlands into a fuller regional stay. Even a half day gives a real sense of Xanthi's layered history, but the mix of city, river, and coast here holds up well across a longer visit.
