How Many Days Should I Spend on Amorgos?

Amorgos asks for three to four days, enough to hike to Hozoviotissa Monastery, settle into both port villages, and reach the island's beaches without rushing.

Amorgos covers well over a first day in Chora. The Venetian castle overlooking the village gives sweeping views of the Aegean, and a morning coffee in the square sets a good pace before the afternoon hike to the Hozoviotissa Monastery, built into a cliff face in the 11th century, best timed a couple of hours before sunset when the heat has eased.

A second day suits the island's beaches. Agia Anna, small and partly pebbled, gained international attention as a filming location for The Big Blue, and Katapola, about six kilometers from Chora, holds its own beach along with fishing tavernas and boats that run to the more remote coves of Maltezi and Plakes.

A third day belongs to Aegiali, on the island's northern half, where the villages of Lagada, Tholaria, and Potamos keep a quieter pace than Chora and connect by an extensive network of marked trails linking nearly every settlement on the island.

A fourth day works well for hiking further or renting a car to reach the Olympia shipwreck near the southwest tip, a rusted freighter visible from the coastal road that has become its own landmark. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Naxos, about 70 to 90 minutes away, or directly from Piraeus on a longer crossing.

Two days cover Chora and the monastery hike comfortably, three adds the beaches and Katapola, and four brings Aegiali and its trails into the trip fully. Even a short two-day stay leaves a real sense of the island's cliffs and coastline, but Amorgos gives back the most to travelers who trade a rushed itinerary for open, unplanned time.
