How Many Days Should I Spend on Andros?

Andros asks for three to five days, enough to cover both the coast and the hiking trails that set the island apart from its neighbors.

Andros covers well over a first day exploring the north. Gavrio, the port, and Batsi, the busiest village on the island, both hold organized beaches nearby, including Agios Petros and Kipri, and a coastal drive between the two takes in viewpoints most visitors don't expect from the Cyclades.

A second day belongs to Chora, the capital, where the first automatic lighthouse in Greece marks the harbor entrance and a statue of the Unknown Sailor stands at Riva Square. The Nautical Museum nearby traces the island's maritime history, and the Goulandris Foundation's Museum of Modern Art gives Chora a cultural weight rare for an island this size. Menites, a short drive out, holds carved stone fountains and mineral springs worth the detour.

A third day suits the island's waterfalls and mountain villages. The Pithara waterfalls, reached by a short walk through a shaded valley, and the villages of Stenies and Apikia round out a day focused on Andros's greener, wetter interior, unusual for a Cycladic island.

A fourth or fifth day works best for hiking. Andros holds one of Europe's most respected networks of marked trails, connecting villages, old stone bridges, and remote beaches like Achla and Vitali that only open up to those willing to walk or take a 4x4. Most visitors arrive through Rafina near Athens or via a short ferry from Mykonos.

Two days cover the north coast and Chora comfortably, three adds the waterfalls and mountain villages, and four or five turns the trip into a real hiking stay. Even a short two-day visit covers Andros's main points of interest, but the island's trail network gives serious hikers reason to stay considerably longer.
