How Many Days Should I Spend on Antikythera?

Antikythera works around the ferry schedule rather than a preferred length of stay, and two to three days is both the practical minimum and enough to take in the island properly.

Antikythera fills a first day easily around Potamos, the main village and port, where a couple of tavernas serve whatever was caught or harvested that day and locals gather in the central square over ouzo and meze. Xiropotamos beach, a short walk east, gives an easy first swim in water that stays notably clear given how little traffic the coastline sees.

A second day belongs to the ruins of Aegila, a fortified Hellenistic city with walls still reaching six meters in places, sitting above the bay near Xiropotamos. The site remains under active excavation each summer, and a 2004 discovery there of clay vessels dating to 3500 BC adds real depth to a walk through the ruins.

A third day suits the island's role as a critical stopover for migratory birds, since the Hellenic Ornithological Society runs a permanent monitoring station out of the old primary school, tracking around 250 species that pass through each spring and fall. Hiking to the Apolytara Lighthouse on the southern tip, or simply swimming at Halara near Potamos, rounds out a slower day built around the island's quiet.

Antikythera connects by ferry from Piraeus, Gythio, Neapoli, and Kissamos on Crete, though sailings run only a few times a week, so travel plans need to build around the ferry rotation rather than a fixed number of days.

Two days cover Potamos and the ruins at Aegila comfortably, and three brings the bird observatory and lighthouse hike properly into the trip. Given how infrequently ferries run, most visitors find that once they've made the crossing, staying the full stretch between boats is worth it, and the island's silence is exactly the point.
