How Many Days Should I Spend on Arki?
Arki covers well over a day trip from Patmos or Lipsi, but two to three days let the island's stillness settle in after the tour boats leave each afternoon.
Arki fills a first day easily around its single village, home to fewer than 45 year-round residents and a handful of family-run tavernas surrounding the harbor. Swimming directly off the rocks near the port gives an easy first afternoon in the water, and a Greek coffee at one of the port cafes sets a good pace for the rest of the visit.
A second day belongs to Tiganakia Beach, a series of small coves with turquoise water and smooth rocks that pairs naturally with a hike to the small church on the hill above the village, giving a wide view over the surrounding islets in about fifteen minutes. The ruins of a 4th century BC castle, later rebuilt by the Byzantines, sit on a low hill nearby for anyone interested in the island's older history.
A third day suits a boat trip to Marathi, the closest of Arki's neighboring islets, where a single taverna and its own beach give a different setting for the same slow pace. Migratory birds pass through the island each spring and fall, and Arki's Natura 2000 designation reflects that role for anyone interested in birdwatching.
Arki has no airport, and most visitors connect through Patmos or Lipsi by a short boat crossing of around 40 minutes, with regular connections running through the summer months.
A day trip covers the village and Tiganakia comfortably, two nights add the hike and a boat trip to Marathi, and three let the island's routine of swimming, eating, and resting take over fully. Even a few hours here leave an impression, but travelers who stay overnight are the ones who describe Arki's sunsets and quiet as the real reason to come back.
