How Many Days Should I Spend on Crete?
Crete covers well over three days for a single region, and seven to ten let both the west and east coasts, along with the mountains between them, come together at a proper pace.
Crete fills a first day or two easily in Chania, where the Venetian harbor and old town's winding alleys hold the Municipal Market and the Maritime Museum, along with the Archaeological Museum, housed in a former monastery. Nea Chora beach, close to the center, and the Kastelli walls, with views over the city, round out a slower final morning before heading further west.
A third day belongs to Elafonisi or Balos, both known for pale sand and shallow, colorful water, best reached by a guided tour or boat trip given how long the drive alone can take from Chania.
A fourth day suits the Samaria Gorge, one of the longest in Europe, with a full day hike descending from the White Mountains down to the Libyan Sea, ending at the village of Agia Roumeli, reachable only by the trail itself or by boat.
Wine tastings in the countryside, boat trips to Balos and the pink sand beaches, and a guided visit to Knossos are all common ways to fill a fifth day, and you can browse Crete's excursions and outdoor activities to see what fits your base.
A sixth or seventh day works well for Heraklion and the Palace of Knossos, considered the origin of the Minotaur myth, along with the Archaeological Museum there, one of the best in Greece, or a half day trip to Spinalonga, the former leper colony island near Agios Nikolaos.
Three days cover one base and its closest sights comfortably, five bring both mountain and coast into the trip, and seven to ten let both Chania and Heraklion, along with day trips between them, round out a full itinerary. Even a short three-day visit gives a real sense of one region's character, but Crete's size and range give genuine reason to plan for considerably more time than that.
