How Many Days Should I Spend on Kea?

Kea asks for three to five days, enough to hike its old stone paths, work through its villages, and reach beaches spread across a coastline that takes real time to cover.

Kea covers well over a first day in Ioulida, the capital, perched on the mountainside above the port with narrow lanes, small restaurants, and views stretching down to the sea. Korissia, the port town below, and Vourkari, a fishing village a short drive further, each offer their own base depending on how close to the water you want to stay.

A second day suits the island's beaches by car, since Kea's dirt roads and spread-out coastline reward a rental far more than relying on the limited bus schedule. Gialiskari and Koundouros draw a more social crowd, while Sikamia and Kaliskia, both shaded by tamarisk trees, offer a quieter alternative for anyone wanting fewer people around.

A third day belongs to the island's history and hiking. The Lion of Kea, an eight meter archaic stone sculpture carved directly into the hillside outside Ioulida, sits along one of the more accessible trails, and the ancient site of Karthaia, with temples dedicated to Apollo and Athena, requires a longer hike reachable mainly on foot or by boat.

A fourth or fifth day works well for the rest of the island's 80 kilometers of marked paths, connecting villages, old monasteries, and remote coves that a single visit rarely covers in full, and food built around loutza, a cured pork specialty, and fava rounds out a longer stay in Ioulida's tavernas.

Two days cover Ioulida and a first beach day comfortably, three adds the Lion of Kea and Karthaia, and four or five brings the island's full trail network into a proper hiking stay. Even a short weekend trip from Athens gives real insight into the island's villages and beaches, but Kea's trails and quieter corners give genuine reason to build in more time than that.
