How Many Days Should I Spend on Koufonisia?

Koufonisia asks for three days, enough to walk its coastal path, work through its beaches, and cross to Kato Koufonisi without feeling rushed between any of them.

Koufonisia covers well over a first day in Chora, the island's only village, where windmills and the rock formation known as the Devil's Eye sit within easy walking distance of the harbor. Italida Beach, right next to the port, gives an easy first swim with shallow, gradual entry that works well for families.

A second day belongs to the coastal path running from Chora toward Pori, the island's furthest beach at 40 to 50 minutes on foot. The walk passes several smaller coves along the way, and a local bus or boat taxi covers the same route for anyone wanting to skip sections of the walk in the day's heat.

A third day suits a crossing to Kato Koufonisi, a mostly uninhabited stretch of coastline with one taverna and long stretches of open beach, reachable by a short boat ride from the harbor that runs on a set schedule through the day. Anyone wanting a longer look at the island's terrain can hike to Profitis Ilias instead, with views on a clear day reaching as far as Santorini.

Koufonisia has no airport, and most travelers connect through Naxos or Amorgos by ferry, both close enough to combine into a longer Cyclades trip for anyone with additional days.

Two days cover Chora and the coastal path comfortably, and three brings Kato Koufonisi or the hike to Profitis Ilias into the trip properly. Locals often say each day on the island slows you down a little more than the last, and travelers who stay four or five days tend to find that's exactly what happens, with less on the agenda and more time simply spent on a favorite beach.
