How Many Days Should I Spend on Naxos?

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, and its size alone means three to five days makes far more sense than the quick overnight stop many travelers give it.

Naxos splits cleanly into a few distinct days. One belongs to Chora, the capital, where the Portara, a freestanding marble doorway from an unfinished 6th century BC temple, greets every ferry arrival, and the old Venetian castle quarter climbs above it with narrow lanes and the island's Archaeological Museum. A second day covers the beaches along the west coast, Agios Prokopios, Plaka, and Mikri Vigla among them, each with a different character but all within easy reach of Chora by bus or car.

Naxos's interior earns its own day entirely. The mountain village of Halki holds neoclassical mansions and a small distillery producing kitron, a citrus liqueur made nowhere else, and Apeiranthos, built almost entirely from stone, keeps its own small museums tucked into a village center that runs on its own terms rather than a tourist schedule. The Temple of Demeter, an ancient sanctuary built from local white marble in the Gyroulas Valley near Sangri, and Mount Zas, the tallest peak in the Cyclades, both round out a day focused on the island beyond its coastline.

A boat trip is one of the better ways to see parts of Naxos that roads don't reach, and tours and boat trips on Naxos cover everything from catamaran cruises to full days spent hopping along the coastline. Anyone with a fifth day can extend the trip with a crossing to Amorgos or the Small Cyclades, including Koufonisia, both reachable by regular ferry.

Three days covers Chora, the beaches, and one inland village without feeling rushed, four adds a proper look at the interior, and five leaves room for a day trip to the smaller islands nearby. Even a single day gives a real sense of the Portara and Chora, but the island's mountain villages and quieter beaches are worth staying on for.
