How Many Days Should I Spend on Rhodes?
Rhodes covers well over three days for the Old Town and Lindos, and five to seven let the island's beaches, mountain villages, and canyons come together at a proper pace.
Rhodes fills a first day easily in the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, and the Archaeological Museum, housed in the former Knights' Hospital, sit within a short walk of each other. Elli Beach, wrapping around the northernmost tip of the island, gives an easy afternoon swim close to the walls.
A second day belongs to Lindos, about an hour south, where the Acropolis of Lindos crowns a cliff at 116 meters with the Temple of Athena Lindia and a wide view over the coast. Tsambika Beach, a stretch of golden sand along the way, makes a good stop for the drive down.
A third day suits the ruins of ancient Kamiros and Ialysos, the two other city-states that made up ancient Rhodes alongside the capital, along with the Valley of the Butterflies, a shaded gorge that draws thousands of Jersey tiger moths each summer.
Wine tastings, jeep safaris into the island's mountain villages, and diving trips along the coast are all common ways to fill a fourth day, and you can browse tours and excursions on Rhodes to see what fits.
A fifth day or more works well for the villages of Prophet Elias and Embonas in the mountainous interior, or a boat crossing to Symi for anyone wanting to pair Rhodes with a smaller neighboring island.
Three days cover the Old Town, Lindos, and a first beach comfortably, five brings the ancient sites and the Valley of the Butterflies into the trip, and seven or more let the mountain villages, wine region, and a Symi day trip round things out fully. Even a short three-day visit gives a real sense of the island's medieval history and coastline, but Rhodes's size and range give genuine reason to plan for a full week.
