How Many Days Should I Spend on Salamis?

Salamis covers well over a day trip from Athens, but two days let the naval history, the southern pine forests, and the quieter western coast come together without rushing.

Salamis fills a first day easily around the strait where Themistocles lured the Persian fleet into a confined space in 480 BC, one of history's most consequential naval battles. The Archaeological Museum of Salamis traces the island's story from its earliest settlers through the classical period, with a dedicated room covering the battle's heroes and strategies, and the Tomb of the Salamis Warriors is worth visiting early, before the sun makes the site's lack of shade a real factor.

A second day belongs to the southern pine forests, best explored by car since the island is large enough and car-dependent enough that walking alone won't reach its better parts. The Cave of Euripides, near the village of Peristeria, marks where the tragedian is said to have written many of his plays, and Kanakia, a beach reachable by a forest trail, gives the day a proper swim once the hiking is done.

The Monastery of Faneromeni, on the coast, rounds out either day well, and Aianteio and Selinia, both villages on the southern half of the island, hold their own beaches and tavernas for anyone wanting to slow the pace down further.

Salamis connects to Athens by the most frequent ferry route in Greece, running between Perama and Paloukia every 15 to 20 minutes around the clock, which makes timing a visit here simpler than almost anywhere else in the country.

A single day covers the strait, the museum, and the tomb comfortably for anyone visiting from Athens, and a second day brings the pine forests, the cave, and a proper beach into the trip. Even a short day trip gives a real sense of the island's naval history, but Salamis's southern coast and quieter villages give clear reason to stay for the full weekend.
