How Many Days Should I Spend on Samothrace?

Samothrace covers well over two days for the sanctuary and the closest waterfalls, and three to five let the island's mountain and wilder south settle in without rushing.

Samothrace fills a first day easily around the Sanctuary of the Great Gods near Paleopolis, once equal in importance to Delphi and the site where the Winged Victory now in the Louvre was discovered in 1863. The circular path around the ancient city walls takes about two hours, and the on-site museum adds real context to the ruins.

A second day belongs to the Fonias River, where a hike through the gorge reaches natural rock pools called vathres, fed by waterfalls that make for a swim unlike anywhere else in Greece. Therma, the village at the trailhead, holds naturally hot mineral springs still used much as they were in antiquity.

A third day suits Chora, the island's capital, set on the mountainside with stone houses and castle ruins built in a style closer to Thrace than the Aegean, along with Pachia Ammos, the island's main sandy beach on the south coast.

A fourth or fifth day works well for a longer hike up Mount Saos, the highest peak in the Aegean at 1,611 meters, or the harder to reach Kremasto Nero waterfall on the southern coast, which drops directly into the sea.

Samothrace has no airport, and travelers reach it by ferry from Alexandroupoli, a crossing of just under two hours that runs once or twice daily depending on the season.

Two days cover the sanctuary and Fonias gorge comfortably, three adds Chora and a beach day, and four or five bring Mount Saos and the wilder south coast into a fuller stay. Even a short two-day visit gives a real sense of the island's ancient weight, but Samothrace's mountains and waterfalls give genuine reason to stay considerably longer than most travelers plan for.
