How Many Days Should I Spend on Therasia?

Therasia covers well over a single day for most visitors, but an overnight stay of two nights gives the island's quieter side of the caldera the time it deserves.

Therasia fills a first day easily around Manolas, the capital, built directly on the caldera rim with whitewashed houses and views across to Oia and Fira from a quieter vantage point than either. A short ferry from Athinios or Ammoudi Bay in Oia gets most day-trippers there in 10 to 45 minutes depending on the departure point, and a walk through the village's narrow lanes covers the main sights within a couple of hours.

A second day, for anyone staying overnight rather than returning to Santorini by evening, suits the abandoned village of Agrillia, where cave houses and cellars carved into the rock sit largely untouched by the hotel development found across the water. Korfos beach, with its black volcanic pebbles and a direct view across the caldera, gives an easy stop for swimming close to the port.

A local vineyard on the island, Mikra Thira, produces wine with the same volcanic mineral character found on Santorini, and a tasting there pairs naturally with a slower second day spent walking the trail from Manolas to the island's highest point for a wider view over the Aegean.

Most tours pair Therasia with a half or full day trip from Santorini, and that's enough time to see Manolas and Korfos beach without staying over. A two-night stay, though, lets Agrillia, the wine tasting, and both sunrise and sunset over the caldera settle in properly, something a day tour rarely allows.

A half day covers Manolas and a swim comfortably, a full day adds the wine tasting and more time in the village, and two nights bring Agrillia and both ends of the day's light into the trip. Even a quick crossing gives a real sense of the caldera from Therasia's side, but the island holds enough of its own villages and vineyards to justify staying rather than just passing through.
