How Many Days Should I Spend on Tilos?

Tilos covers well over three days for its villages and beaches, and five let the island's hiking trails and quieter pace fully take hold.

Tilos fills a first day easily in Livadia, the main village, where an evening at Livadia Beach pairs naturally with a traditional meal in one of the seafront tavernas. The island's electric bus, celebrated at international film festivals for its role in Tilos becoming Greece's first fully energy-independent island, connects Livadia to the other villages for anyone without a rental car.

A second day belongs to the Charkadio Cave, where the fossilized remains of Europe's last dwarf elephants were discovered, and the small museum nearby explains that history in more depth. Eristos Beach, one of the longest on the island, gives an easy afternoon of swimming after the cave.

A third day suits Megalo Chorio, the medieval capital, with a castle built by the Knights of St. John above the village and the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon, the island's most important church, nearby. Mikro Chorio, abandoned after World War Two, opens a single bar in its ruins during summer nights and gives the day an unexpected finish.

A fourth or fifth day works well for the island's marked hiking trails, protected under Natura 2000 and known for drawing rare birds including the Bonelli's Eagle, along with the marine reserve where Mediterranean monk seals occasionally swim close to shore. Tilos connects easily by ferry to both Rhodes and Kos, making it simple to pair with either island.

Two days cover Livadia and the cave comfortably, three adds Megalo Chorio and Mikro Chorio, and four or five bring the hiking trails and birdwatching into a fuller stay. Even a short two-day visit gives a real sense of the island's pace, but Tilos's trails, villages, and nature reserve give genuine reason to plan for considerably more time than that.
