Is Alexandroupoli Worth Visiting?

Alexandroupoli anchors the far edge of Thrace with a landmark lighthouse, a major wetland reserve, and a ferry gateway to one of the least visited islands in Greece.

Alexandroupoli started as a fishing village in the mid-19th century and took its name from King Alexander I not long after. Its landmark, an 18 meter lighthouse built by the French in 1880, still operates and anchors a waterfront promenade that turns pedestrian only in the evenings, filling with locals over coffee and gelato as the sun sets over the water.

The Evros Delta National Park covers more than 200 square kilometers of wetland just outside the city and draws serious birdwatchers for its migratory species, a stretch of coastline that feels closer to a nature reserve than a beach town. The port also serves as the main departure point for ferries to Samothrace, an island known for mountain trails and waterfalls rather than beach resorts.

Alexandroupoli sits about 30 kilometers from the Turkish border and roughly 310 kilometers from Thessaloniki, with its own airport handling flights that make the city reachable without the long overland drive across Thrace. That combination of border city, ferry port, and wetland access gives it a role few mainland cities this size can claim.

Alexandroupoli suits travelers heading to Samothrace by ferry, birdwatchers drawn to the delta, and anyone road tripping the length of Thrace, with a lighthouse, a wetland, and a working waterfront that hold their own regardless of what comes next on the itinerary.
