Is Alonissos Worth Visiting?

Alonissos anchors the largest marine park in the Mediterranean, a protected stretch of sea covering more than 2,200 square kilometers and standing as one of the last strongholds anywhere for the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal.

Alonissos sits in the Sporades, the largest and only inhabited island in a cluster of six smaller islands and more than twenty uninhabited islets that together make up the National Marine Park, established in 1992 as Greece's first. Boat tours from Patitiri, the modern port town, reach islands like Peristera, with its natural harbors and an underwater shipwreck site, and Gioura, home to a rare indigenous wild goat and the Cave of the Cyclops, lined with stalactites.

Alonissos became the first Greek island to ban plastic bags in 2015, a decision that later influenced similar policies elsewhere in the Mediterranean, and the MOm information center in Patitiri, dedicated to monk seal research and rescue, gives visitors a direct look at the conservation work behind the park's reputation. Old Alonissos, the original hilltop capital, was largely destroyed by a 1965 earthquake and left abandoned until a wave of mostly foreign residents restored its stone houses, turning the narrow, winding streets, originally built that way to deter pirates, back into a lived-in village with sweeping views.

Roughly twenty beaches line the island's coast, most concentrated on the southeast side, and Kokkinokastro and Chrisi Milia pair reddish cliffs with clear water in settings that draw comparisons to the Caribbean. Hiking trails, more than fifteen marked routes, cross pine forest and olive groves across most of the island, and the Blue Cave on the northeast coast, reachable only by boat, holds stalactite formations worth the detour.

Alonissos connects to Skiathos and Skopelos by ferry, with those islands offering the nearest airport connections to Athens and Thessaloniki. It suits hikers, divers, and travelers drawn to marine conservation and quieter beaches over resort infrastructure, and locals and repeat visitors generally recommend three to seven days to cover the island and its surrounding waters properly.
