Is Andros Good for Families?

Andros spreads more than 70 beaches across a genuinely large island, and enough of them stay calm and shallow that families rarely struggle to find the right spot. Yes, it works well for families.

Andros's Neimporio Beach ranks as one of the island's most popular family choices, and Kypri, with its sandy shore and clear water, suits both swimming and water sports for older kids. Ateni Beach forms a sheltered, swimming-pool-like cove with a beach bar nearby, while Agios Petros and Fellos, both a short drive from the port of Gavrio, give families golden sand and shallow, protected water well suited to young children, even without much in the way of tourist facilities at Fellos specifically.

Beyond the coast, Andros holds one of the more extensive hiking networks in Europe, with routes gentle enough for casual family walks, including one that leads past a waterfall at Pythara and through the village of Apoikia to the Sariza spring, a manageable outing that turns into a real adventure for kids picking figs or spotting goats along the way.

The island splits into three distinct towns: Gavrio, the working port; Batsi, a cosmopolitan beach town with tavernas and shops close together; and Chora, the elevated capital with boutiques, galleries, and a livelier evening scene for parents once the kids are settled. Cultural events run through summer, including music nights and museum activities, giving families a reason to stay in one place for an evening rather than always chasing the next beach.

Andros connects to Athens by ferry from Rafina in about two hours, making it a manageable trip without a long transfer, and it pairs easily with Tinos for families extending their stay in the Cyclades.

Andros suits families wanting real variety, from calm swimming beaches to genuine hiking and three distinct towns, all spread across an island large enough that a week here rarely feels repetitive.
