Is Antiparos Worth Visiting?
Antiparos packs a vertical cave holding one of the oldest known stalagmites in Europe, a car-free old town built around a Venetian fortress, and a short boat ride to an ancient sanctuary on a nearby uninhabited island.
Antiparos sits just off the western coast of Paros, reachable by a short ferry crossing that takes about ten minutes from Pounda port. Its best known attraction, the Cave of Antiparos, drops 411 steps into a vertical chamber lined with stalactites and stalagmites, and visitors from centuries past left their signatures carved into the walls, among them King Otto and Queen Amalia, who explored the cave together in 1840.
Chora, the island's only village, stays car-free and centers on the ruins of a Venetian castle, with cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and bakeries. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have owned a villa on the island since 2004, and their low-key presence has drawn other familiar faces over the years, including Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, though the village itself stays small enough to walk end to end in about ten minutes.
The beaches vary by mood as much as the village does. Soros holds some of the clearest water on the island and turns into a lively beach club scene by afternoon, while Agios Georgios offers calm, shallow water better suited to families, and Faneromeni sits down a dirt road that keeps it quieter than the rest. A short boat ride from Agios Georgios crosses to the uninhabited island of Despotiko, where an ongoing excavation has uncovered a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, its white marble ruins standing right against the water.
Antiparos suits travelers who want a car-free island with real caves, ruins, and beaches without a long list of sights to chase, and its small size makes it a strong fit for families or anyone after a slower pace than Paros keeps.
