Is Antipaxos Worth Visiting?

Antipaxos covers barely five square kilometers, holds no roads, no cars, and no real town, and legend credits Dionysus himself with planting the vineyards that still cover much of the island today.

Antipaxos sits a few kilometers south of Paxos in the Ionian Sea, and its beaches carry a reputation that draws comparisons to the Caribbean. Voutoumi, the largest, pairs a wide curve of white sand and pebble with water that shifts through nearly every shade of turquoise and blue, while Vrika, at the island's northern tip, offers shallower water better suited to families. A concrete path connecting the two takes about 30 minutes on foot, climbing through olive groves and vineyards with sea views along the way.

Mesovrika, tucked between the two main beaches, stays pebbly and free of facilities, which keeps it quieter and its water especially clear for snorkeling, and Rodovani, on the island's harder to reach northwest side, holds a small sea cave and a similar stretch of white pebble without the crowds. At the southern tip, a trail leads to the Akra Ovoros lighthouse, passing a hidden cove and elevated views across the open Ionian Sea.

The island's vineyards produce a small amount of organic red wine sold locally and at a handful of beachfront tavernas, one of the few real industries here beyond fishing and summer tourism. Accommodation is limited to a handful of private villas and farmhouses, so most travelers arrive by water taxi from Gaios on Paxos, a crossing of about 15 to 20 minutes, though staying overnight lets visitors have Vrika or Voutoumi to themselves before the day boats arrive.

Antipaxos has no airport, so travelers reach it through Corfu or Paxos by ferry and then cross by water taxi. It suits couples, swimmers, and anyone wanting some of the clearest water in the Ionian without built-up infrastructure, and even a single day here, from an early boat to a late one, gives a real sense of the island.
