Is Arki Worth Visiting?

Arki holds one of the smallest year-round populations of any inhabited Greek island, somewhere around 40 people, and that scale shapes every part of a visit here.

Arki sits about 11 kilometers southeast of Patmos, and its only settlement clusters around the harbor, a handful of houses, two family-run tavernas, and a single small shop. Above the port, the ruins of a Hellenistic fortress dating to the 4th century BC mark what was once a lookout station between Samos and Kos, and the island's oldest church, Panagia Pantanassa, sits on a rise about a kilometer northeast with views over the entire bay.

Tiganakia, the island's best known beach on the southeastern edge, pairs sand and pebbles with clear water and scattered rocky islets just offshore. Limnari and Patelia offer quieter alternatives, and all of the island's beaches stay unorganized, so anyone visiting brings their own shade and supplies. A short boat ride reaches Marathi, a nearby islet with a long stretch of sand and its own small tavernas that draw day-trippers from Patmos and Lipsi.

Arki draws sailors and yacht owners more than typical travelers, its sheltered harbor a popular anchorage through summer, and every August 23rd the island holds a festival for the Virgin Mary with traditional music and food that pulls in visitors from the surrounding islands. Migratory birds pass through in spring and fall, including species rarely seen elsewhere in the Aegean, giving the otherwise barren, rocky landscape a role few visitors expect.

Arki has no airport and no need for a car, since the whole island covers under three kilometers of road. Ferries connect a few times a week from Patmos, with less frequent links to Lipsi and Chios. It suits travelers who want real isolation and nothing to do but swim, eat, and slow down completely, and an overnight stay makes far more sense than a rushed day trip.
