Is Dokos Worth Visiting?

Dokos holds one of the most significant discoveries in maritime archaeology, a shipwreck resting in its waters that predates the pyramids of Giza by centuries, found in 1975 and still considered the oldest known shipwreck in the world.

Dokos sits between Hydra, Spetses, and the Ermioni coastline in the Argo-Saronic Gulf, a rocky, mountainous island reaching 308 meters at its highest point with no real village and no roads. A handful of shepherds, fishermen, and Orthodox monks make up its only year-round presence, and the island runs on wind, sun, and the sound of goat bells rather than any tourist infrastructure.

The remains of a Byzantine-Venetian castle sit on the island's eastern hill, marking a settlement that likely served as a lookout point over ship traffic entering the Argolic Gulf, and archaeological finds trace habitation back roughly six thousand years to the early Bronze Age. Skintos Bay, the island's only real natural harbor, sheltered the Hydriot fleet during the Greek War of Independence and remains the main anchorage for the sailboats and yachts that visit today.

The 1923 stone lighthouse on the island's eastern tip marks one end of a hiking trail that climbs past the castle ruins to the island's summit, a route steep enough to call for proper boots and some fitness. Divers and snorkelers come specifically for the waters around the ancient shipwreck site, and the small, unorganized beach at Skintos, backed by olive trees and the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, draws campers who bring everything they need for the day or overnight.

Dokos has no ferry service, so the only way in is by water taxi from Hydra, Spetses, or Ermioni, a crossing that typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. It suits hikers, divers, and campers looking for real isolation rather than facilities, and it works well as an addition to time already spent on the more developed islands nearby.
