Is Drama Worth Visiting?

Drama built its identity around water, with a natural spring running straight through the city center and a wine region that ranks among Greece's best surrounding it on every side.

Drama centers on Agia Varvara Park, fed by a natural spring in the middle of the city, once ranked among Europe's finest parks and giving Drama a real centerpiece rather than a generic main square. The surrounding region has been settled since the late Neolithic period, drawing people for millennia to its fertile plains and abundant water sources.

The area produces some of Greece's most award winning wine, with seven wineries open for visits around the city, and the food carries strong Thracian and Asia Minor influences from the refugee communities who settled here after 1922. Dishes like hunkiar beyendi and gulbashi turn up on local menus alongside grilled meats and mastic halva.

Nature is a bigger draw still outside the city. The cave of Aggitis, also called Maara, sends visitors along a corridor above an underground river lined with stalactites, and Mount Falakro, about 46 kilometers away, runs a ski resort with views stretching to Thassos and Mount Pangaio. The ancient site of Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage listing with Roman ruins and early Christian basilicas, sits just outside town and marks the location of the battle that shaped the end of the Roman Republic.

Drama suits travelers interested in wine, caves, and ancient history, and it pairs naturally with a stop in Kavala nearby for anyone building a longer route through the region.
