Is Fournoi Worth Visiting?

Fournoi runs the largest fishing fleet in the Aegean relative to its size, and underwater archaeologists have found one of the densest concentrations of ancient shipwrecks anywhere in the world scattered across the waters around it.

Fournoi sits between Samos and Ikaria, an archipelago of over twenty islets where only two, Fournoi and Thymaina, hold year-round populations. Chora, also called Kambos, wraps around the harbor in tiers of whitewashed houses shaded by mulberry trees, and the island earned its name, meaning ovens in Greek, from the bakeries that still line its main square. On the hill above town, a Cyclopean wall from a prehistoric fortress sits beneath the ruins of a later classical acropolis.

The ancient marble quarry at Petrokopio supplied stone to Miletus and Ephesus in antiquity, and intact column fragments still lie scattered across the beach below it, turning a swim there into something closer to walking through history than a typical afternoon at the shore. Fournoi's coves and hidden inlets made it a base for pirates through the Middle Ages, a history that gave the archipelago its old name, the Korseon or Corsair Islands, before Dodecanese refugees resettled it in the 19th century.

Psili Ammos, close to Chora, offers the most convenient sandy swimming, while Kassidi and the beaches around Chrysomilia in the north, reachable mainly by boat or a steep 600-step descent, stay unorganized and far quieter. A daily boat crosses to Thymaina, the archipelago's second inhabited island, where a single fishing village and the long stretch of Keramidou beach round out a slower day trip. Fournoi's fishing fleet keeps tables stocked with fresh catch across its tavernas, and the island's honey, made from wild thyme and sage, has its own local reputation.

Fournoi has no airport, so travelers connect through Samos or Ikaria by ferry, or take a direct sailing from Piraeus that runs closer to 10 or 11 hours. It suits travelers who want real fishing village life, quiet beaches, and archaeology without crowds, and its Natura 2000 designation reflects how much of the surrounding sea and coastline has stayed untouched.
