Ithaca keeps several of its closest beaches shallow and shaded, and its slower pace suits families wanting real mythology and small harbor villages over big resort infrastructure. Yes, it works well for families, especially those with kids old enough to enjoy some hiking or a short boat ride.

Ithaca's Filiatro, a short drive from Vathy, gives the clearest family pick, its calm, clear water shaded by olive trees and equipped with a bar, restaurant, and rentable sunbeds. Dexa, in a sheltered bay close to town, offers similarly calm water suited to young kids, and its position near the ancient ruins of Aetos and the Cave of Eumaeus gives families an easy pairing of beach time and mythology. Mnimata, pebbly but shallow, and Polis Beach, known for its lively fig-tree shaded gathering spot, both add family-friendly options further afield.

In the north, Kourvoulia, a set of three connected bays, ranks as a favorite among local families, and Kioni's beaches sit close enough to the village that a swim, a meal, and a coffee all happen within a short walk of each other.

Some of Ithaca's more striking beaches, including Gidaki, require a boat from Vathy or a 30 minute hike from Skinos, making them better suited to families with older kids willing to make the extra effort. The payoff tends to be worth it, with turquoise water and white limestone framing a quieter setting than the beaches closer to town.

Beyond the coast, mule paths connect Vathy to mountain villages like Anogi, giving families a real hiking option through spring wildflowers and past archaeological sites tied to Homer's Odyssey, including Pilikata Hill and the Cave of the Nymphs.

Ithaca has no airport, and ferries connect through Astakos on the mainland or via Kefalonia and Lefkada, so families should plan the crossing as part of the trip. Ithaca suits families wanting calm beaches, real mythology, and a slower island pace, with enough beaches close to Vathy and further afield to fill a stay of several days.
