Is Ithaca Worth Visiting?

Ithaca gave the world one of literature's oldest metaphors for the journey home, and the island Homer wrote about in the Odyssey still carries that legend into every harbor and hillside village.

Ithaca sits just off the northeast coast of Kefalonia, separated by a narrow strait, and Vathy, the capital, wraps around one of Greece's safest natural harbors in a bay so sheltered it draws sailors from across the Ionian. Archaeological sites tied to the Odysseus legend spread across the island: the Acropolis of Alalkomenae, once identified by the archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld as the possible site of Odysseus's palace, sits above the village of Piso Aetos, and the Cave of the Nymphs near Vathy, mentioned in Homer's text, holds stalactite formations that once served as a place of Mycenaean worship.

Stavros, the island's second largest village, holds a small museum tracing finds from nearby Pilikata Hill, a site some archaeologists connect to Odysseus's palace directly, and every August the village hosts the island's biggest festival, a panigiri that runs late into the night. Anogi, one of the oldest settlements on the island, sits high in the mountains among upright stone monoliths and a 14th century Byzantine-frescoed church, and Kioni, a fishing village on the southeastern coast, keeps its harbor lined with old windmills and colorful boats.

Ithaca's beaches stay largely pebbled rather than sandy, with Filiatro standing out for its clear water and Gidaki reachable only by boat or a demanding hike. The Monastery of Kathara, perched on the island's highest peak, gives a quiet, elevated view over the Ionian Sea, and the surrounding waters occasionally shelter Mediterranean monk seals, among the most endangered marine mammals in the world.

Ithaca has no airport, so most travelers arrive by ferry through Kefalonia or Lefkada, with connections from Patras on the mainland. It suits travelers who want real Greek mythology alongside quiet coves and unhurried villages, and while a few days cover the highlights, the island's mix of history and landscape gives repeat visitors reason to return.
