Is Kalymnos Worth Visiting?

Kalymnos built its identity on the sea long before climbers discovered its limestone, and the island still carries both histories at once, a working sponge diving port and a world class climbing destination on the same stretch of coast.

Kalymnos sits between Kos and Leros, its volcanic, rocky terrain pushing generations of residents toward sponge diving as the main way to make a living. Pothia, the capital, wraps around its harbor with colorful neoclassical houses built on that trade, and the Archaeological Museum inside holds the Lady of Kalymnos, a bronze statue pulled from the sea. Sponge workshops around the harbor still process natural sponges by hand, and the House of Kalymnos folk museum traces the diving tradition that once defined the island's economy.

Over 3,000 bolted climbing routes rise from limestone cliffs on the island's north side, drawing climbers of every level from around the world. Grande Grotta offers classic cave tufa climbing, and the routes range from beginner-friendly grades to some of the hardest in Greece. The islet of Telendos, split off from Kalymnos by an earthquake in 554 AD, sits just offshore and has become its own climbing destination, reachable by a short boat from Myrties.

The Valley of Vathy, a fertile strip on the island's east side planted with orange and mandarin groves, runs down to a narrow inlet often compared to a Norwegian fjord. Beaches along the west coast, including Massouri, Myrties, and Kantouni, hold organized stretches of sand, while Palionisos and the black volcanic sand of Platys Yialos suit anyone after something quieter. Boat trips run from Pothia to the nearby island of Pserimos for a slower day of shallow, turquoise water.

Kalymnos has its own small airport with flights from Athens, and ferries connect daily to Kos, Leros, and Patmos. It suits climbers first, but also beach travelers, divers, and anyone interested in real maritime tradition, and the mix of adventure, food, and culture gives it enough to fill the better part of a week.
