Is Kasos Worth Visiting?

Kasos sits at the southern edge of the Dodecanese, where the Aegean meets the Libyan Sea, and its history runs as deep as its five villages run quiet.

Kasos built its identity on the sea. During the Greek Revolution the island fielded one of the strongest fleets in the Aegean, and that resistance came at a heavy cost: in June 1824, Egyptian forces destroyed the island in an event still remembered as the Holocaust of Kasos, commemorated each year with three days of events. The Heroes' Monument in Fry, the island's capital and port, honors that history, and the old pirate anchorage of Bouka harbor nearby still fills with colorful fishing boats.

Five villages sit close together across the island, each with its own character. Agia Marina, the largest, spreads across the hillsides with neoclassical mansions and white-domed churches. Poli, the oldest, sits at 200 meters on the site of the island's ancient acropolis, where excavations have uncovered tombs from the 4th century BC. Arvanitochori holds the Folklore Museum and a traditional olive mill. Panigyria, all-night celebrations built around lyra and laouto music, dancing, and food, run through the summer and give visitors a direct look at island tradition rather than a staged version of it.

The Wild Kasos hiking trail runs 8.6 kilometers from the Monastery of Agios Georgios to Agia Marina, passing shepherd's huts, a gorge locals compare to a miniature Grand Canyon, and the Ellinokamara Cave, a natural opening used as a place of worship since antiquity. Boats from Fry cross to the uninhabited islet of Armathia, where Marmara Beach pairs turquoise water with golden sand.

Kasos has its own small airport, though flights typically connect through Karpathos or Crete, and a direct ferry from Piraeus runs a few times a week and takes upwards of 12 hours. It suits travelers drawn to real seafaring history, hiking, and island festivals over polished beaches or nightlife, and pairs naturally with time on nearby Karpathos or Crete.
