Is Katerini Worth Visiting?

Katerini's identity was built by resettlement, not tourism, and that history gives the city more depth than it usually gets credit for.

Katerini is the capital of the Pieria region, and a large share of its population descends from Pontic Greek and Asia Minor refugees who resettled here after the population exchanges of 1922. That heritage runs through the city rather than sitting in a single museum exhibit, though the Folklore Museum, established by the Pieria Pontic Association, is a strong starting point, holding traditional costumes, tools, and household objects that trace the community's roots back to the Black Sea region. The central square, Plateia Eirinis, stays busy with cafes and local markets that serve residents first, tourists second.

Ancient Dion, a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus set among natural streams just outside the city, holds temples, Hellenistic and Roman theaters, mosaic covered baths, and early Christian basilicas, and draws far fewer crowds than sites like Delphi or Olympia.

Katerini also sits in a rare combination of terrain. Mount Olympus rises directly behind the city, with Litochoro serving as the gateway village for hikers heading into the national park, and an 80 kilometer beach runs south from Platamonas past Katerini itself. Rapsani, known for its wine, and the Elatohori ski resort round out the area for different seasons.

Katerini suits travelers with a connection to its Pontic and Asia Minor heritage, and anyone who wants ancient ruins, mountain trails, and a real beach all reachable from one base. It's worth building a stay around, not just glancing at from the car window.
