Is Kefalonia Expensive?

Kefalonia offers real value compared to Greece's more heavily marketed islands, and travelers coming from Santorini or Mykonos consistently describe the prices here as a welcome change after those islands' costs.

Kefalonia tends to run cheaper overall than Zakynthos, its closer Ionian neighbor, with hotels that aren't as expensive and budget-friendly options common across the island rather than concentrated in just a few areas. Eating at casual tavernas or buying fresh produce from local markets keeps food costs reasonable throughout a stay, and dining here tends to run a bit less than a comparable meal on Zakynthos while still delivering the same fresh, local cooking.

Corfu, by contrast, tends to run higher than Kefalonia given its stronger tourist demand and more limited space, so travelers weighing the two Ionian islands against each other will generally find Kefalonia the more budget-friendly choice of the pair.

Renting a car adds a real cost to a Kefalonia trip, though it remains close to essential for reaching remote beaches like Myrtos and the island's inland villages, since local buses cover only the main towns and attractions. Cards work reliably at restaurants, hotels, and rental agencies, though smaller tavernas, kiosks, and some local transport options still prefer cash, so keeping some on hand simplifies day-to-day spending.

Visiting in May or October rather than the peak weeks of summer brings real savings on accommodation and rental cars alike, while keeping the weather warm enough for swimming and hiking.

Kefalonia suits travelers wanting a real Ionian island experience without the costs of Santorini or Mykonos, and it holds up as one of the better value options even against its closest neighbors, Zakynthos and Corfu.
