Is Kefalonia Good for Families?

Kefalonia spreads shallow, family-friendly beaches along its south coast while keeping its most famous stretch of sand better suited to older kids, giving families real choice depending on age. Yes, it works well for families.

Kefalonia's Lourdas, on the south coast, gives the most practical family pick, with shallow water extending 30 meters out, lifeguards through the season, and a row of beachfront tavernas for easy meals. Xi Beach adds a gently sloping seabed and soft reddish sand well suited to paddling, and Avithos and Makris Gialos, both shallow and calm, round out the south coast options, with Makris Gialos holding Blue Flag status and enough watersports to keep older kids busy too.

Myrtos, the island's most photographed beach, works better for families with older kids, since its steep slope and occasional strong currents at high tide need closer supervision than the gentler southern beaches. Antisamos, on the other hand, gives families a full range of watersports, from pedal boats and paddleboards to jet skis and banana boats, and it doubles as a film location from Captain Corelli's Mandolin for anyone who remembers the story.

The Melissani Cave, reached by a short boat ride across its underground lake lit by sunlight through a collapsed section of roof, gives families a real natural spectacle, and pairing it with the nearby Drogarati Cave rounds out an easy half-day trip. A water sports center near Lassi Beach offers jet skiing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding lessons for all ages, with instructors and safety equipment included.

Boat tours from Kefalonia reach nearby Ithaca for swimming stops in secluded coves, or extend further to Zakynthos to see the Navagio shipwreck from the water.

Kefalonia suits families wanting real variety between calm, organized beaches and dramatic scenery, with enough range across its 39 beaches and nearby caves to fill a week without repeating a day.
