Is Kythira Worth Visiting?

Kythira is said to be one of two birthplaces of Aphrodite in Greek mythology, born from sea foam near the fishing village of Avlemonas, and the island still carries that same layered mix of myth, Venetian ruins, and untouched coastline.

Kythira sits between the Peloponnese and Crete, closer in feel to Mani or Crete than to the Cyclades or Ionian islands nearby. Chora, the capital, climbs a hill above Kapsali Bay to a Venetian castle built in 1503 over an earlier Byzantine fortress, its walls still marked with the lion of Saint Mark, and the frescoed Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa sits inside the grounds with 360-degree views over the bay.

Inland, the village of Mylopotamos anchors the island's greenest corner, with a 4.8 kilometer trail running through a valley of old watermills and more than 20 small waterfalls to the Neraida, or Fonissa, waterfall, which drops 20 meters into a cold pool locals describe as only for the brave. The Saint Sophia Cave nearby holds around 2,000 square meters of stalactites and a small rock-cut church at its entrance, staying a cool 16 degrees even in peak summer.

Kaladi, reachable by a steep path north of Chora, ranks among the island's best beaches for its clear water and surrounding rock formations, and Avlemonas, a small fishing village with its own 16th century Venetian fortress, keeps quiet stone lanes and a sheltered bay good for swimming. Kythira's more than 100 kilometers of marked hiking trails connect villages like Mitata and Potamos, and the island produces its own thyme honey and olive oil sold by small local producers.

Kythira has its own small airport with flights from Athens, and ferries run from Piraeus or Neapoli in the Peloponnese, with a boat also connecting onward to Antikythera for anyone continuing further south. It suits travelers who want real history, hiking, and quiet beaches without the density of the Cyclades, and its recent addition to lists of Europe's best destinations for 2026 suggests that quiet won't last indefinitely.
